Professor Howard Morphy, Diector of the Research School of Humanities and the Arts  opened the Djalkiri Art exhabition at he Western Plaines Cultural Centre in Dubbo on 9 July this year.  The exhibition is a collaboration between four distinguished visiting artists and five Yolngu artists from east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.  Professor Morphy said, "The theme of the project was artistic engagement with the natural world and the species dwelling within it."

The featured Yolngu artists Djambwa Marawili, Marirra Marawili, Mulhun Wirrpanda, Liyawaday Wirrpanda and Marrnyula Mununggurr joined Fiona Hall, Judy Watson, John Wolfeley and Jorg Schmeisser in preparng works for the exhibition.  Professor Morphy said that both groups of artists learnt from each others different techniques.  "The Yolngu artworks were built up in stages, beginning with a structuraing f he overall design and then adding increasing detail and effect through he process of cross-hatching with a marwat, the long thin brush of human hair.  The shimmereing brilliance seems to leap out of the work and it has this movement feel to it," Morphy said.
