Alice Tay Lecture on Law & Human Rights: Padma Raman, PSM, & ANROWS CEO on 'Understanding Domestic and Family Violence'

What might we gain from greater literacy in the language of human rights?

Violence against women and children is a pervasive human rights issue in Australia. The current state of this crisis requires us all to think boldly and collectively about change. Taking a human rights perspective on violence against women is one way to sharpen our focus around accountability for the safety and dignity of all people. It can also pose critical challenges to deeply embedded ways of thinking.

In this lecture, Padma Raman, PSM and CEO of ANROWS, will explore how human rights frameworks can complement and challenge gendered perspectives, and the role of rigorous research in developing an evidence base to inform our actions.

About the speaker:

Ms Raman has a wealth of experience as a senior executive at both the state and federal level, and in 2018 was awarded the Public Service Medal for outstanding service leading significant cultural, technological and governance change. Before starting as CEO of ANROWS, she was the Chief Executive of the Australian Human Rights Commission for 11 years.

Prior to that she established, and was Chief Executive Officer of, the Victorian Law Reform Commission for nine years. During that time, Ms Raman was a member of the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission and was instrumental in assisting the Victorian Government develop and implement the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006.

Ms Raman sits on a number of boards including the Human Rights Law Center and the ANU Council. She has a Master of Laws by research, focusing on the experiences of immigrant and Indigenous women under the Australian legal system.

For your safety and enjoyment, please follow ANU and ACT Government advice in relation to Covid safety, and note that face masks remain a requirement for enclosed spaces on the ANU campus.

This lecture will be followed by light refreshments in the foyer of the RSSS building. This is an excellent opportunity to view the We Bleed the Same exhibition.

This event will be recorded.

** Please note that this is a rescheduled event. Participants who registered for the 10th August date remain registered to attend on the 24th of August. Please contact us on Freilich.Project@anu.edu.au if you are registered but unable to attend the event. **
