Juan Poblete’s volume New Approaches to Latin American Studies (Routledge 2018) provided an up-to-date snapshot of new and renewed approaches to Latin American Studies framed around the concept of “the turn,” such as: the subalternist turn, decolonial turn, and Indigenous studies turn, to name a few. 

This symposium will centre on another major recent turn in Literary Studies: the World Literature Turn. It will focus on recent research on the debate over World Literature from the perspective of Iberian and Latin American Studies, which has had a reinvigorating, if at times controversial, reception in our disciplines.

This event is open to faculty, students, and members of the public interested in the latest research into Spanish and Latin American literature from highly esteemed and up-and-coming scholars in the field. It will also be an opportunity to discuss the pedagogical implications of studying World Literature as the ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics prepares to launch the courses World Literature in Translation and Spanish World Literature in 2027.

The presentations will be in English, but the use of Spanish is welcome for questions and in discussion. The event will open with the launch of Chilean Literature as World Literature: 1990-2025 (co-edited by Thomas Nulley-Valdés and Juan Poblete, De Gruyter 2026) brought to you by the Cultures of Screen, Performance and Print Network (CuSPP) seminar.
