The International Viola Society is the umbrella organization supporting national and regional groups of violists in twenty-one ‘National Sections’ on six continents, including the Australian & New Zealand Viola Society. As non-profit organisations IVS and ANZVS encourage and assist activities to serve all friends of the viola, including viola research, publications, performances and other events. Since 1973 the IVS Congress has visited forty-seven centres, most often in Europe and North America, also including Wellington NZ (2001) and Adelaide (in 2007), next in Thailand in June 2023 with another congress shaping up for Australia in 2024.

ANZVS, in addition to bi-annual print Journals, monthly viola newsletters, website and social media links, is increasingly committed to presenting viola gatherings: Café Violaperformance workshops, masterclasses, composition competitions, viola days (next in Canberra 8 October, Brisbane 5 November), viola weekends (most recently for the Newcastle Music Festival) conferences (previously in Melbourne and Sydney) and ANZVS programs contributed to an ongoing IVS monthly video series.
