Congratulations to Associate Professor Mitchell Whitelaw and Dr Geoff Hinchcliffe from the School of Art & Design whose project ‘Corley Explorer’ has been announced as the 2020 Good Design Award Winner.

The Frank and Eunice Corley collection is a unique photographic record of Queensland suburbs in the 1960’s and 1970’s, comprising over 61,000 photographs. The ‘Corley Explorer’ is an explorable interface that invites the community to enrich the collection by tagging and locating houses, sharing stories, images and their recollections.

‘The Explorer’ was launched in early December 2018 as part of the State Library of Queensland exhibition, ‘Home: A Suburban Obsession,’ featuring the Corley Collection. The response was remarkable, with over 35,000 houses located and over 1900 stories contributed. The Corley Explorer was also an honoree in the 24th annual Webby Awards.

Mitchell Whitelaw is Associate Professor of Design, and Geoff Hinchcliffe is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Dean Education (College of Arts & Social Sciences). Both academics are members of the Computational Culture Lab Research Hub at the ANU School of Art & Design.
