Dr Robert Wellington, Senior Lecturer for the Centre for Art History & Art Theory, has been elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London.
The Society of Antiquaries is an educational charity that promotes the understanding of the human past and recognises distinction in this field through election to its Fellowship.
Founded in 1707, the Society meets its remit through a wide-ranging programme of activities at Burlington House in London and at Kelmscott Manor – the inspirational retreat of William Morris – in the Cotswolds. It runs regular public, educational and academic events, lectures and exhibitions, gives grants for research and conservation, publishes books and journals on heritage topics and contributes to the formulation of public policy on the care of our historic environment and cultural property.
Members of the Society are called Fellows and are known as Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA).
To be elected fellow persons shall be ‘excelling in the knowledge of the antiquities and history of this and other nations’ and be ‘desirous to promote the honour, business and emoluments of the Society’.
New Fellows are elected by existing Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries who take out a 'blue paper' and seek signatures of up to twelve nominees for the person to be elected. Robert Wellington was elected Fellow at a ballot that closed on 24 June 2021.
