Handing on/handing over the Classical Tradition?

Drs Martha and Margaret Malamud will give short presentations on their own scholarly engagement with the Classical tradition in the American context. Other topics of discussion may include:

  • who owns Classics and who should teach it?
  • what is nature of the Classical tradition in Australasia and how have the inhabitants of the Antipodes engaged with it historically?
  • what is the potential job market for PhD students doing theses on the Classical tradition in Australasia?

Dr Martha Malamud is an Associate Professor of Classics at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research interests include Roman Imperial Literature and History. She is the editor of the Classics journal Arethusa and has written numerous articles and chapters and co-edited several volumes on Classics in film.


Dr Margaret Malamud is Professor of Ancient History and Islamic Studies at the New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Her research interests include the Classics in popular culture and the Classical tradition in American history and culture. Her most recent book is Ancient Rome and Modern America (2009). Professor Malamud has recently
been awarded National Endowment of the Humanities Faculty Research Award to work on a project entitled Black Minerva:African Americans and Classical Culture.
