11th Symposium on Indigenous Music and Dance

The first Symposium on Indigenous Music and Dance was held at the 2002 Garma Festival of Traditional Culture in partnership with the Yothu Yindi Foundation, the Australian Institute for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne.  This initial meeting resolved that community, academic and industry partners should collaborate to ensure that endangered Australian performance repertoires be recorded and held for future generations; that digital archives be established to support local access to all data generated; and that materials are made available to appropriate community health, education, governance and business initiatives.

The Symposium is held annually as the main meeting of the National Recording Project for Indigenous Performance in Australia, which is now co-directed by Dr Payi Linda Ford of the CDU Northern institute and Dr Aaron Corn of the ANU School of Music.
