We Need to Talk: Peacebuilders Rami and Bassam in conversation at ANU

Rami Elhanan and Bassam Aramin are from ‘enemy’ sides but are self-proclaimed ‘brothers’.

Rami is a Jewish Israeli from Jerusalem who lost his daughter Smadar in a Palestinian suicide bombing in 1997, the same year Bassam’s daughter Abir was born. Bassam, who grew up in Hebron, was a former Palestinian resistance fighter who had spent time in an Israeli jail where he saw the film Schindler’s List that changed his life. His daughter, Abir, was tragically killed by the bullet of Israeli border police. She was aged 10.

Their grief bonded the two and forged a joint path of dialogue and reconciliation, rather than hate and revenge.

In May, Plus61J Media will bring Rami and Bassam to Australia for the first time for a series of public talks and engagement.

Join the two for a special night in conversation at the ANU Research School of Social Sciences (RSSS) auditorium, Monday 22nd May, beginning with drinks and nibbles from 5:30pm. Proceedings commence at 6:00pm.

This event is organised in cooperation with:

The Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University

The Centre of Arab & Islamic Studies, Australian National University

The Herbert and Valmae Freilich Project for the Study of Bigotry
