Repatriation at the ANU Classics Museum – ongoing opportunities and challenges

Museums across the globe are grappling with the management of historical collecting practices – and ANU is no exception. This presentation by the Curator of the ANU Classics Museum will explore the developing story of a number of international repatriation cases within the museum’s collection, including to Italy and Cyprus. This evolving, long-term project will include a discussion of: the processes and people involved in repatriation case management; forging diplomatic relationships with foreign governments; community expectations and consultation; management of sensitive information; media interest and coverage; museum labelling and interpretation; and what this all means for teaching and research here at the ANU.

Speaker:
Dr Georgia Pike-Rowney is the Friends’ Lecturer and Curator of the Classics Museum. She is a transdisciplinary researcher and practitioner, whose work encompasses music, community outreach, classical studies, health and wellbeing, and history.
