The Plant Sensibilia Machine is a large-scale hand-operated dyeing machine that brings the process out of the studio and into the public realm.
For Siteworks 2022, The Plant Sensibilia Machine connects plants of Bundanon and the Shoalhaven with the significant Yuin voices of Aunty Deidre Martin and Jacob Morris. Through a collaborative process of yarning, Mayo, Martin and Morris have created a series of works which tell stories of plants and people living and growing together in this moment on Yuin Country.
Rebecca Mayo’s art practice uses species and site-specific plant dyes to rectify the contemporary malaise of plant blindness. Ethics and a labour of care underpin her approach as she tests new ways for audiences to re-connect with plants.
The Tellus Art Project 2022 is a collaboration between UNSW Art and Design, the Sydney Royal Botanic Gardens Herbarium, Bundanon and Open Humanities Press.
