Decoding Satellite Imagery through Creative Practice

This seminar will discuss recent practice-led research that explores the cultural and scientific implications of the growing number of satellites in Earth’s lower orbital space. As an artist, my work seeks to create embodied relationships with satellites to understand the nexus of planetary observation and technological expansion as the growth of satellite mega-constellations intersects with climate change. Based on recent research developed through a Fulbright Scholarship at the Expanded Animation Research + Practice Program, University of Southern California, I will present examples of studio practice that critically and creatively explores socio-political relationships compressed into satellite transmissions.

Anna Madeleine Raupach is a multidisciplinary Australian artist and a 2024 Fulbright Scholar at the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. She is a Lecturer at the Australian National University School of Art & Design with a PhD in Media Arts from the University of New South Wales (2014). She has developed cross-disciplinary projects through residencies with the Australian Network for Art and Technology, 2022; Powerhouse Museum, Sydney, 2019; Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris, 2018; and Common Room Network Foundation, Bandung, 2017, resulting in digital and physical artworks that are exhibited internationally in solo and group exhibitions.

This event will be held both on-campus and online via Zoom (a link to the online stream will be sent to registered attendees).

The School of Art & Design Seminar series will continue weekly on Tuesdays from 1-2pm, between 17 February and 21 October 2025, co-convened by Dr Alex Burchmore and Alia Parker.
